Councillor Lynn Langlands talked about the accessible beach garden project on Bexhill's East Parade

Bexhill Beach Garden Project

A ramp to enable access for all to the beach installed at Bexhill’s East Parade brought a vison to Cllr Lynn Langlands. Her vision, a beach garden accessible to all, is now beginning to take shape.   Lynn spoke about this vision to members of Senlac Rotary at their meeting on 15thMarch saying that, “For some time I had wanted to see a beach access for our physically challenged residents and visitors. When one appeared on East Parade I thought it would be good to have another access on West Parade, but make it an area where things could happen or people could dally a while. I thought of a Beach Garden. Community Supporters was a relatively new charity and Lindsay White (CEO) and the Young Pollinators were keen to lead on the project.” An architect, Elise Liversedge has drawn up plans to incorporate board walks and lily pad sitting areas and a local builder who specialises in using recycled materials has offered his help. Hopefully, too, there will be some artwork incorporated. Lynn’s group is also investigating native planting to use within the area and a biodiversity plan has been produced; a further advantage of native planting is to help stabilise the shingle. The chosen site is near the toilets at the end of West Parade and Lynn would like to upgrade and incorporate the disabled toilet into the scheme. Who does Lynn envisage using the gardens? Her thoughts are: family gatherings, fitness groups, beach school, art groups, Parkinson, dementia, visually impaired and residential homes and for general health and wellbeing.

Key to all this is money raising, some £45,000 is needed; neither Rother District Council nor Bexhill Town Council has offered any funding, so Lynn is relying on help from local organisations and grants from other bodies. How to get involved? There are a number of ways; sharing the project, donating, helping with fund raising, getting involved with planting and artwork designs and talking to those involved.
