Young Chef 2023

Excellent cookery was the order of the day at this year's Young Chef final at Wayland Academy

This year's competition started with 12 students from Years 7 & 8 who were given one hour to produce 6 scones with a flavouring of their choice.

Eight students progressed to Round 2, where they had one hour to prepare, cook and serve a main course dish. They had to show independent skills, organisation in the kitchen including hygiene, and a balance of colour and nutrition in their dish.

Five students progressed to the Final, where they were tasked with preparing, cooking and serving a main course and dessert in one and a half hours. The judges had great difficulty in separating ther entries, so skilfully had they been prepared and presented.

After much deliberation, the first prize was awarded to Calease Hinton, who served a main course of beef lasagne with a mixed side salad, followed by poached pears served with vanilla ice cream. One of the judges remarked that it was possibly the best lasagne he had ever tasted!

Second prize was awarded to Sophie Restall, who served up a beautifully presented chicken curry with rose flavoured rice, mixed salad and chutney, followed by a creamy vanilla cheesecake.

We were delighted that both prize winners were able to attend our Awards evening on 9th March, where they were presented with certificates of their achievement.
