Rimes of the Ancient Mariner

Talk from John Hall

Our Speaker was John Hall who regaled us with his very detailed knowledge of his subject. We learnt much about the life of Coleridge, his strengths and health issues.2022 was the 250th anniversary of the his birth and the statute erected in the churchyard of Ottery Church celebrates his life.

John bought alive the timeless themes of the wonderful “Rime of the Ancient Mainer” through his poem” the Modern Trooper” and showed illustrative slides of analogous subjects e.g. an underground train, a homeless person.

We were encouraged to visit Coleridge’s Cottage at Nether Stowey, Somerset (National Trust).

John is Chair of the Ottery Writers Guild, who held their first Festival last year. Several members purchased a book from the selection displayed.
