At our first gathering of 2025, we welcomed Judy and Richard Forgan from the charity "Tools with a Mission", a charity that Swanage and Purbeck Rotary have been pleased to support.
Judy explained that the charity aims to use tools no longer required by people in the UK to help those in other parts of the world who really need them.
Tools are collected in local hubs and then taken to a refurbishment centre where they are renovated before being sent out to Africa where they are put to very good use.
Not only are the tools themselves very welcome, but they enable training to be offered to people in Africa wishing to learn a trade who, in turn, are able to apply the skills that they have learned to start their own businesses, thus helping their local economies.
Their slogan "the power of tools to transform lives" is no idle statement as the support that they give to their local economies is immeasurable.
The charity is run on a very lean basis with only eight employees and there is not much that can't be accepted for consideration.
Questions from the floor, ranging from what can't be accepted by the charity, to how funds are raised, to what happens to tools that can't be recycled, were ably addressed by Richard and Judy.
On behalf of Swanage and Purbeck Rotary, Rotarian David Pike thanked both Richard and Judy for coming to talk to us. More information about the charity can be found on their website here.
