Wensleydale Wander 2025 Report

A record entry and perfect weather for walking

There was a record entry of almost 400 walkers and runners, with sun and light winds all day. Some of the leading runners, arriving at Lords Bridge checkpoint, elected to change from the Long to the Short route. I presume that was because they thought the conditions were too warm for them to take the longer, harder route. In fact, at High Lane, Rubbing Houses, and higher on Penhill, there was a pleasant cool breeze.

Both Walks were started at 9.00am in Grove Square, Leyburn, by Club President Richard Pennell, though walkers first gathered for registration at Wensleydale School. There was a choice of two circular walks, one a 23 mile challenge and a shorter one of 12 miles, both starting and finishing in Leyburn. There were liquid refreshments at various checkpoints on both walks, and the walks ended at the school, where a choice of hot soups and cakes, plus more liquid refreshments were served to some very hot and tired walkers.

Although the Wander was, and is, designed as a walk, hence the name, an increasing number of entrants choose to run it each year. Inevitably, the fastest treat it as a race so, for those wishing to know how they fared, click on Results.

The first Man home on the Short route was again Matthew Ansell in 1hr 26 minutes, 13 Sec, 3 minutes less than last year! Second was Marc Ellis in 1hr 26 min, 26 sec. Third was Jamie Gynne in 1hr,26min.

First Lady home In the Short route was Louise Gossage in 1hr, 51min, 51Sec Second was Cassie Ramsay in 1hr 57 min, 45 sec. Third was Alison Eagle in 2hr 2min, 49sec

First man home in the Long Route was Nigel Copland in 3hr, 20min. Second was Derek Morris in 3hr 26min. Third was Wayne Anderson in 3hr 33min.

First Lady home in the Long route was Rebecca Howard in 3hr 44min, 44sec.Second was Catherine Eaton in 3hr 44min, 59sec. Third was Victoria French in 3hr 45min, 00sec. Apologies for earlier incorrect report.

We would like to thank the RAYNET volunteer radio operators, our wives/husbands,friends, and of course all walkers and runners for supporting the event. We raised a record £6,500 for our Charity Fund. Half of that will go to Bloodrunners, volunteers who deliver urgent blood samples and supplies to our hospitals on powerful motorbikes,
