Syria - Ongoing conflict

At the beginning of October, Turkey launched an offensive in north-eastern Syria. As warplanes bombed parts of the region and tanks arrive at the border, families were left suffering.

We have worked with our trusted partners in Syria to support families caught up in the latest fighting in the northeast. We have provided family-sized tents with winter liners for warmth, along with five sleeping mats per family.

We have also provided essential winter items to nearly 2,500 families who will be facing the plummeting temperatures this winter. These include warm children’s clothing.

Working through local partners, we have supported over 50,000 families affected by the conflict in Syria and Iraq since 2012. This makes it the largest and most sustained response in our 19-year history – but the need is as urgent as ever.

Find out more about the recent offensive in north-eastern Syria and how you can help.

About the crisis

The Philippines - Typhoon Kammuri

People standing amongst debris

In early December 2019 Typhoon Kammuri, known locally as Typhoon Tisoy, hit land four times in the Philippines. Communities were severely affected across Northern Samar.

Coastal communities were hit the most. Beaches were covered in the debris of destroyed homes. Electricity was wiped out, roads were washed away and scores of fishing boats, the main source of livelihoods, were smashed apart.

Working through our Philippines office, we supported over 2,500 families who saw their homes wash out to sea.

Somaliland - Drought

Nimo - Somaliland
'We used to have so many goats, but they have almost all died and there is no more pasture for those that are left' - Nimo

Severe drought in Somaliland has affected an estimated 766,000 people since November 2016.

Over the last three years the drought has killed up to 80% of the region’s livestock. This has had a devastating effect for thousands of families who rely on livestock farming, forcing them to flee their homes in search of better grazing land.

We have worked closely with our partner ActionAid to support families affected by the severe drought, with essential items like tarpaulins and rope.

We have supported nearly 4,500 families so far, but our work in Somaliland is far from over. We’re already planning the next project with our partners in the country.

Lake Chad Basin - The forgotten crisis

Since 2009, Boko Haram has been waging an insurgency in Northern Nigeria. The violence has since spread to the neighbouring regions of NigerChad and Cameroon.

Around 10.7 million people in the Lake Chad region are in need of relief assistance. 2.4 million people are estimated to have been displaced and perpetual insecurity continues to drive displacement.

In Cameroon, we have recently completed a project through our partners, which supported over 1,000 families with tents, shelter kits and other essential aid items. In Nigeria, we have worked our partner ACTED to support internally displaced families.
