'Was a close run thing', said the Duke of Wellington, and his words echoed
on Wednesday evening, 11th January, at the Ryston Park Golf Club, when the
Downham Market Rotary Club hosted the 1st round of the District Inter Club
Quiz, against March, last years Champions.

The teams of 6, answered, or very often didn't, questions, on History,
Geography, Science, Sport, Film, T.V, and Music.

After the first four rounds Downham were in a commanding lead of 23 points
to 15. There was then the opportunity to take a break, or substitute a team
member, but both sides were eager to press home their advantage, or recover
from a seemingly hopeless position.

The next round, on Film saw the home side only scored 2 points, but March
managed to pull back the lead to 25 points each. The final rounds were all
square, going into tie breaker questions.

Two more questions a side, and still even. Downham had the first question in
every round, and in what proved to be decisive, were asked the route for the
steam train, Royal Scot. They answered incorrectly Edinburgh to London,
leaving March the only alternative, Glasgow to London, and victory by one
point.

President John Orbell, then thanked the Question Master and Time Keeper,
John Clarke and David Evans, in turn receiving best wishes for the next
round, believed to be at Wisbech, from the Downham team of Alan Culley, Tony
Fulford, Paul Garner, John Rice, George Bell and Chris Shaw. March team was
unchanged from last year with John Orbell, Albert Horton, Don Roberts, Alan
Burdass, Mike Calvert and Robert Freeman.
