A Rotary stall and stewarding opportunity at the closing ceremony for the Oslympic Games. 11.30pm - 5.00pm.

The Oswestry Games is a community event which will take place in and around Oswestry in the weeks leading up to the Olympic Games in 2012.   Oswestry Sports Council has brought together a strong organising committee which is working hard to make the Oswestry Games a huge success.

The Closing Ceremony will be held at the new Leisure Centre between 10.00am and 5.00pm, with a variety of sports clubs and others providing entertainment, to complement the main sporting events of a swimming gala in the pool and a 10k run.

The Rotary Club of Oswestry will be running a Rotary membership information stall on this day from 11.30am.

The Rotary Club of Oswestry was one of the major sponsors of the recent Oswestry Games, committing £5,000 - or about half the staging cost - from the Mary Hignett Bequest Fund.

The club president, Rotarian John Ward, said: "It has been a privilege for the club to have been associated with the games. As soon as we heard about the plans, we knew that it was something we should be supporting and the fit with one of the main objectives of the Bequest Fund was perfect.

"Over the last five or six years the fund has awarded grants totalling over £45,000 to local sports clubs. Cricket, rugby, bowls, football, tennis, rounders, North Shropshire Special Olympics and Riding for the Disabled as well as community sports projects have all been supported. We will shortly be inviting bids for funding in our 2012 annual round and encourage local clubs to get ready to submit requests for support for their latest projects.

"As well as our role as a sponsor of the Oswestry Games, the club has been active in helping with the planning of the Games and I would like to thank our representative on the organising committee, Mrs Hazel Yates, for her very significant contribution to their success."

The club had a prominent display at the closing event of the games featuring the Rotary charity Shelterbox, which provides immediate relief supplies to all parts of the world suffering from the effects of natural disasters.
