Oswestry's Charter Night with entertainment from members of Oswestry Musical Theatre Company

Rotarian John Ward, President of the Rotary Club of Oswestry, used the occasion of his Clubs 84th Annual Charter Night at The Walls, to announce an initiative to both increase awareness of male cancers and to raise money for related research.

He told the audience of nearly a hundred and representing more than ten Rotary Clubs: We are organizing a 5km Men Walking 4 Men event. It tells you everything in the name except the date which is Sunday May 12th. We are doing this under the Rotary banner because it should raise the profile of Rotary generally. The money raised is going to mens cancer charities and to making men more aware of the dangers of male cancers. We want men to come out and walk, we are not going to turn women away because we want their money, but its the men we want to see. To enter you have to go to our club web site, which will give more information and then link to BT My Donate where you can register

If we raise a few hundred pounds it will be a good result but what we would really like to see is the bigger towns like Wrexham, Chester, Shrewsbury and Telford joining the campaign next year by organizing their own walks.
Contrasting the way women are typically prepared to be very open about their health issues with the reticence of most men, he paid tribute to the work of three women Rotarians - Vicki Hawes, Liz Swain and Hilary Nurse from the Rotary Club of Mawddach who have visited many Rotary Clubs in the District, including Oswestry, to provide information about prostate and testicular cancer.

Responding to the Presidents speech, Rtn Roger Heath, District Governor of Rotarys District 1180 congratulated the Club on its wide range of activities in the local community, especially for its support of the Polio Eradication Programme, its work with young people and for initiatives like the one just announced.
