Unveiling of the plaque.

Wednesday 8th August, 2012, saw the culmination of almost three years planning and tribulations, when The Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, Hugh Duberly CBE unveiled a plaque at the site of the Stone Cross in The Causeway, March, to commemorate the Jubilee of H.M. The Queen.

The gift to the town of March, from the local Rotary Club, will serve hopefully, for generations to come, as a link with the remarkable year that 2012 has been for Great Britain.

Well over a hundred invited guests, and local people gathered in bright sunshine at 3 p.m. to witness to this landmark event in the towns history. This is perhaps, the most prestigious undertaking, by the March Rotary Club, cementing their commitment to supporting the local community.

President Ross Davies welcomed the guests and all attending, in particular the Lord Lieutenant. He then introduced Rotarian Peter English, MBE, who gave a clear and interesting address explains the background to the plaque, and thanking those who made it possible.

Hugh Duberly CBE, spoke that he was pleased to have been invited, mentioning this particular event was one the stood out from the many he had witnessed over the last few months, as one that came from the people, to the people, these sentiments echoed by the warm applause.

He then, with a flourish, removed the Union Flag from the plinth, revealing the stainless steel engraved plaque, set in an ancient limestone block, the relic of a former Fenland Bridge.

Ross Davies formally invited the Mayor of March Town Council, Jan French, to take the custodianship of this token of the link between The Rotary Club of March and the Town. In response, she thanked the Rotary Club for this lasting gesture of goodwill, in this the Jubilee year.

The Bishop Of Huntingdon, the Right Reverend David Tomson, closed the proceeding with a brief, but none the less, fitting tribute of Worship, amid the bustle of traffic, that thankfully ceased at the appropriate moment.

President Ross Davis then invited all, and most did, to participate in light refreshments at St Wendredas Church Hall.

Among the invited Guests and Dignitaries were Rotary District Governor Trevor Sayer, representatives on Cambs Highways Dept, Fenland District Council, March Town Council, The March Society, March Museum, and March Churches Together.

Local historian, Trevor Bevis, who in conjunction with Edna Stacey, had researched and composed the text for the plaque, together with Gary Manning, the Mason from Kent Memorials who did such a fine work on the carving of the raw stone block, were also in attendance. The plaque was engraved using laser technology by Infotech, another local company, and it is hoped that this simple but significant plinth will carry forward the feeling of today, well into the next Century and beyond.
