Oct 2012 Annual John's Jug Golf Tournament

Tue, Oct 30th 2012 at 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Annual informal club golf tournament.

Open to all members.

A great day out at the Gog Magog Golf club for 6 members of the Rotary Club, Colin Brown, Colin Edge, Michael Frape, Bob Sadler, Terry Gardner and Alan Edwards who were playing for John`s Jug.

The individual stableford competition, played over 18holes on the Wandlebury Course, was won with a spectacular score of 35 points by Michael Frape - with a handicap of 22 (not for much longer!)

Organiser Colin reports -

Once the crowds had been subdued sufficiently to allow the 2012 competition for the much coveted John's Jug to start (these autograph hunters can be such a pain) the six very nervous competitors moved to the first tee in brilliant sunshine - laid on by the organiser of course. The bookies favourite Colin Edge was the first to drive off to great applause followed by the well practiced Alan Edwards, then the "dark horse" playing in the name of MDF (not to be confused with, but perhaps sponsored by, Medium-Density Fibreboard !). The crowd moved off to follow these main contenders while Terry Gardner, Bob Sadler and Colin Brown followed in their wake. The result was on a knife edge after the first nine holes, with at least three competitors wondering if they should start preparing their winner's speech. However after coming up with a blistering back nine the "dark horse" showed his pedigree leaving the rest of the field trailing behind and winning with a three point advantage over the second placed competitor.

So very well done to Michael Frape and congratulations on winning the club's golf championship at the first attempt, and for making a very moving and modest acceptance speech. We expect the trophy to be displayed in pride of place on his mantelpiece for the next twelve months, it will also look very impressive on his CV of course ! The tournament was finished off with a sumptuous lunch and the rest of the field going through their rounds, working out how with a bit of luck they all could have won.

The Trophy, John`s Jug, was presented to Michael by last years winner and organisor of the event, Colin Brown.

Michael is quoted as saying 'It is a shame that more Tuesdays can't be spent in such an enjoyable way. I will treasure the Jug until next October - it is now at the engravers !.'
