The Halifax Courier Community Spirit Award Ceremony was held on 18th July at Berties Banqueting Hall in Calderdale.

The seven Rotary Clubs in Calderdale were nominated for the prestigious Charity of the Year Award, awarded by the judges to the organisation they believe has consistently delivered outstanding service to its beneficiaries, promoted and raised its profile, been clear in its goals and strategies, and demonstrated excellence all round.

The other nominations included The Community Foundation for Calderdale, Overgate Hospice, a Group in Brighouse supporting the Elderly and a Band from Elland. Rotary were delighted to have won the Award. Several pages of coverage and details about the Awards appeared in the Halifax Courier on 26th July.

Immediate Past President Ken Forsyth, Rtn Olwen Edwards, Communications Convenor 2012-2013 (both Sowerby Bridge RC) and President Peter Lloyd of Halifax RC had the pleasure of representing Rotary during a wonderful evening, making new contacts with like- minded representatives of other Community spirited organisations and collecting the Award - please see attached photograph.

In speaking with the judges afterwards, it was commented upon that the Award recognised not only the enormous contribution that Rotary Clubs in Calderdale have made within the community over many years, but also the fact that they were now working together in various combinations and collaborations in projects like the local Shoebox Appeal, the Navigation Walk and Calderdale Neighbours Day. Peter Lloyd said, "As a result of receiving the Award, I have invited the Calderdale Clubs Presidents to get together to continue closer working together and discuss possible continuation of the local Shoebox Scheme and other projects."

Last year was the first time Rotary in Calderdale were nominated for this Award. The then Editor of the Courier, Tim Robinson had explained that this was a possibility in one of the many meetings he held with the Clubs representatives to assist Rotary in Calderdale in promoting these new initiatives via the papers within his remit. Rtns Olwen Edwards and Bryan Harkness (immediate past President of Halifax RC), undertook the work to complete the entry based on a thorough account of all seven Calderdale Clubs continuing contributions to their community. This included copies of testimonials from well-known beneficiary organisations, copies of Rotary Horizon for the judges as evidence of our activities, photographs, details of Club structures and accountability, and an overview of the press and publicity coverage over the two previous   years.

Bryan Harkness said, "With the support we have had, and continue to have from John Kenealy, the Editor of the Courier, not forgetting the public, we are able to be more effective within Calderdale  and we should continue to raise Rotary
