Young Chef Competition 2013

Every year Rotary clubs throughout Britain invite young people to take part in Rotary's Young Chef competition. It starts with local heats and progresses to Rotary District finals and then a national final.

This is the third year that the Rotary Club of Market Bosworth has sought local entrants for this competition and again the pupils of the Dixie Grammar School in Market Bosworth took up the challenge.

Some 47 children entered the preliminary local heats with the task of producing scones.  Scones made in each heat found their way to the school staff room so there were plenty of judges both official and unofficial!  The supply of these goodies to the staff seems to be a cunning way of ensuring the popularity of the competition as we are told that the staff members are already looking forward to next year's tasty offerings.

The six best scone makers were judged to be Louise Morgan, Chantal Cook, Lucy Ibbetson, Kieran Madden, Imogen Banton and Harry Lawson. They entered the local final at the Dixie Grammar School on 3rd  December where they were each tasked with cooking a full two course meal of their choice and presenting it in a formal restaurant-like setting.  The judging team was President-elect John Whitehead and his wife Jill, together with Clare Hannaghan the Head of Home Economics, Food and Nutrition at the school.

The quality of all the food was excellent even by celebrity chef standards and this made the judging a very difficult task, requiring much resampling of the mouth-watering preparations. After extensive deliberations the judges awarded Harry Lawson the gold medal and a £15 WH Smith gift voucher. Lucy Ibbetson won the silver and a £10 voucher and Chantal Cook the bronze medal plus a £5 voucher.

Harry's winning entry was a main dish of Salmon and Smoked Haddock Fishcakes with Sea Salt Wedges and Rocket Salad, accompanied with Dill Mayonnaise.  Dessert was Lemon Mousse with Chocolate Ginger Biscuits.
