13 Marshal Papworth Students visit March Rotary Club


March Rotary Club entertained 13 African Agricultural Students at the Conservative Club, Creek Road on Monday 18th May, their annual International Evening.

The students who are from Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Senegal are studying on a ten week course at the Shuttleworth Agricultural College, sponsored by the Marshal Papworth Trust. A charity created some 15 years ago with a substantial legacy receive following the untimely death of Marshal Papworth, a local farmer. It is specifically to help third world farmers improve agricultural practices in their own countries.

Welcomed by Past President John Orbell, Mike Johnston, the Principal of the College, introduced the students to the Club Members and many Guests from Chatteris, Whittlesey and Wisbech Rotary Clubs.  Two students, Clare Onal from Uganda, and Patrice Gwasma from Tanzania, each gave an interesting address to the meeting, on their experience at home and in the UK.

To bring a fine evening to its conclusion, Stewart Papworth, brother of the trust’s benefactor gave a brief account of the history the charities operations to date.

A Vote of Thanks by David Harrison was unanimously approved by the hearty applause from the assembled company
