Aug 2014 Tour and Talk on the Castle Mound, Cambridge 6pm

Tue, Aug 26th 2014 at 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

An historic tour led by experienced guide County Archivist Quentin Carroll, for about an hour.

Are you interested in the history of our own Cambridge City ?

Come and find out about the historic past of the Castle Mound area and get a lovely view of the old city.

There are some walking and steps to negotiate so wear sensible shoes.

14 folk booked in with David and enjoyed a fascinating tour, gently strolling around the original site of Cambridge around the Castle Mound, north of the river.  Lucy Cavendish is just outside the first settlement on the hill top. Apparently it was only in fairly recent times that people began to live to the south of the river where the City centre is today.  The Castle mound was added to the hill to give even more height to the stronghold that guarded this important river crossing.  The area has had many transformations dating back to before Roman times and including a large prison complex before the Shire Hall took over.  The very last part of the Castle onsite is a large stone with a gargoyle face kept on the grass near the visitors carpark.  Quentin was full of interesting details and led us through the ages with enthusiasm.  Thank you!

We met at the Porters Lodge of Lucy Cavendish College, Lady Margaret Road, Cambridge CB3 0BU at 6pm.

On road parking available.
