Rotary Supports Castletown Bridge Renaming in Honour of VC Hero

A bridge in Castletown, Isle of Man has been renamed in honour of the Isle of Man's only Victoria Cross winner.

Major Robert Cain was awarded the highest military decoration for "superb gallantry" after fighting for nine days at Arnhem in World War Two - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Henry_Cain .

On Sunday 7th September 2014, the Majors daughter, Frances Clarkson, carried out the ceremony that saw the bridge near where he lived during his retirement become Cain Bridge.

My father was a very patriotic Manxman and would have been incredibly proud to have this bridge named after him, she said.

The timing of this event is particularly fitting as we prepare to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Operation Market Garden; an audacious attempt by Allied forces to capture a series of bridges, which culminated in the battle to hold the bridge over the Rhine at Arnhem.

The naming was the initiative of the Isle of Man Governments War Memorials Preservation Committee, and Castletown MHK Richard Ronan.

The Rotary Club of Rushen & Western Mann are proud to support the initiative of honouring of Major Cain by paying for the cast nameplate for the bridge.  i
