Oswestry Talking Newspaper celebrates their 1,000th edition.

On Tuesday November 11th 2014, the recording of the 1,000th edition of the Oswestry Talking Newspaper was completed and the memory sticks were sent to Royal Mail for their onward journey to listeners.

Owen Paterson MP, Councillor John Gareth Jones, Town Mayor and Councillor Cynthia Hawksley, former mayor sent their good wishes with all adding to the recording. There was special mention of the 1,000th edition on Radio Shropshire at 08.25 that morning.

John Powell, member of our Club recalls "My own involvement has been from inception of OTN in 1979. In addition, Maureen and I were involved with producing an Oswestry based item for Shropshire Talking Newspaper, pre 1979. Since I sold my business in 1990, I have taken a much more active part in OTN. At first, OTN was issued on cassette fortnightly but since going digital it is now issued weekly on memory stick playable on a player that OTN supply."

Guardian of the Club's new digital projector and famed in the Club for all things techy, John continues, unsurprisingly, "Initially, I was mainly back-up for the technical side if the two doing the recording and tape copying were unable to do so due to holiday, illness or other reason.

"Now, OTN has six technicians on a rota, about 25 readers, also on a rota, and a third rota by a group of ladies who monitor return of the memory sticks."

With a listener group of about 70, John says "OTN runs quite smoothly and feedback from the listeners is usually very good."

Oswestry Rotary Club congratulates OTN for a very valuable service well done for 1,000 editions!
