District Final Young Chef 2015
District 1040 Final of Rotary International Great Britain and Ireland Young Chef Competition took place at Bettyï¿½s Cookery School in Harrogate on Monday 2nd February.
Six young Chefs, between the ages of 14 and 16, from Boroughbridge, Mirfield, Halifax, Scarborough, Skipton and Wakefield took part, having previously won through in their local club and group competitions.
This National Young Chef Competition is a well established and successful competition promoted by Rotary International in Britain and Ireland (RIBI) and sponsored by Filippo Berio to support and encourage the development of cookery skills.
Contestants are asked to prepare, in two hours, a three course healthy meal (starter, main and dessert courses) for two people costing less than 15. Beyond cooking skills the competition also aims to develop food presentation skills, consider food hygiene issues, develop organisational and planning skills and develop an ability to cope in a demanding situation. At each stage all participants receive certificates and there are prizes for the winners. The National winner will win a trip to Tuscany, a day’s tuition with a Michelin-star chef in the UK, and a cash prize..
The winner of District 1040 final was Elisha Sykes sponsored by the Rotary Club of Halifax. Runner up was Rebecca Palmer sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Scarborough and Scarborough Cavaliers. Both Elisha and Rebecca will now go on to the Regional final in Grimsby in March.
Elisha’s Menu was
Starter Pan-fried scallops with cauliflower served 3 ways (Pureed, pickled and deep fried), her Main course char grilled rib-eye with bone marrow pomme amandine, long stemmed broccoli, poached shallot and a red wine jus.
Dessert Sticky toffee pudding with sticky toffee sauce, Chantilly cream and a walnut brittle.
The Judges were Claire Gallagher Head of Food and Marketing and Lisa Bennison Senior tutor from Betty’s Cookery School. Prizes were presented by Rotary District Governor, Rod Walmsley, from Ilkley Rotary Club.
