Micro Loans in Nepal
These pictures show the first recipients of loans issued through the Rotary Club of Dhulikhel in Nepal.
Dhulikhel is some 20 miles east of Kathmandu and the loans are mainly to farmers who lost their stock due to the earthquake. Most live in remote areas of the region and President Ranjeev Shrestha says that their Club has made sure that the loans went to needy people who believe in their work. The 'seed' fund of £2,000 to finance this project was donated by various Clubs in D1040.
Another new scheme is also proposed for the Lekhnath area which is just north of Pokhara, where our first scheme in Nepal is located. The seed fund has not yet been raised so if any Club can donate even a £100 then we should get this one off the ground soon. Funding for schemes in Baglung, Lamjung and Panchumal Valley has also been provided by D1040 through donations from Clubs. Providing a stimulus for economic recovery in the remoter parts of Nepal affected by the earthquakes is a major boost to peoples' futures.
Any Club wishing to donate funds, provide a mentor for a scheme or knows of an overseas Club wishing to commence a Micro Loan Scheme should contact Peter Warburton from RC Skipton.
