Rotary Young Citizen Awards Event 2016
The Rotary Club of Normanton held another successful, Young Citizen Award event at the White Horse in Sharlston on Wednesday 27th. January 2016.
There were approximately seventy persons at the event to witness the Mayor of Normanton, Councillor Denton Jones, on behalf of the community, make the presentations to each of the young citizens, under the age of twenty-five, who by their activities have exemplified the Rotary motto of “Service above Self”, in the community.
The event, hosted by our President Robert Ruffler, was well organised by a small team of Rotarians and our Secretary David Piggin, who had written to many organisations in the district, asking them to identify and nominate any exceptional young person, who they felt was deserving of consideration for an award. We received eight nominations, including the collective nomination of the scouts of the 2nd Wakefield (Crofton) Scout Group.
The adjudicating committee comprised the President of the Inner Wheel Club of Normanton, Pauline Cryer, the
Mayor of Normanton Cllr. Denton Jones and our President, Robert Ruffler.
The nominees, in alphabetical order, were :- Daniel Hirst, Courtney Sue Pitchford, Judie Poole, Sophie Poole, the
Scouts of the 2nd Wakefield (Crofton) Scout Group, Georgia Smith, Ryan Thompson and Lauren Ward.
All the nominees were presented with a framed certificate recording their nomination, generously sponsored by Rotarian Peter Watson, MTS Group Ltd, Flanshaw Way, Wakefield. Additionally, the first prize, consisting of a £250 cheque to the winner’s favoured charity, plus a personal cheque for £50, was awarded to Lauren Ward, a truly exceptional young lady. The second prize, comprising a personal cheque for £30 was awarded to Georgia Smith and
the third prize comprising a personal cheque for £25 was awarded to Ryan Thompson. A “Special Commendation”
certificate was awarded to Daniel Hirst along with a cheque to the value of £100 made out to his favoured charity.
Following the presentation of the awards we all thoroughly enjoyed a buffet, efficiently provided by the staff of The
White Horse to whom we extend our grateful thanks.
