Information on End Polio Now and
the Global Polio Eradication Initiative
Since its launch at the World Health Assembly in 1988, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has reduced the global incidence of polio by more than 99.9% and the number of countries with endemic polio from 125 to 2. More than 10 million people are walking today who otherwise would have been paralysed.
The Polio Eradication and Endgame Strategic Plan 2013-18 was developed to capitalise on the new opportunities available to us following the success of the eradication of polio in India and the advancement of medical science and knowledge; so that we can put an end to this terrible, yet preventable disease.

Rotary International initiated the campaign to eradicate polio much earlier however in the Philippines in 1979 and globally with the launch of PolioPlus in 1985.
