RYLA 2016 (Southern Heat)

The Rotary Young Leadership Scheme is designed to help young people identify and develop their leadership skills and at the same time be a fun day

On Sunday 1st May, the Rotary Club of Grays Thurrock hosted the RYLA (South) event at Grangewaters Activity Centre in South Ockendon. RYLA is designed to help young people identify and develop their leadership skills and at the same time be a fun day. 30 people registered to attend the day which is funded by Rotary. The event commenced with a short discussion on leadership skills. Following this discussion the youngsters were divided into three groups and in their team had to complete four tasks. While completing the tasks examiners were monitoring the students to see how each student operated within the team.

The final event was a raft race. The teams were given the same equipment and had to build a raft then sail it to a buoy in the lake and back. The rafts were all constructed close to the lake and all three were transported by their team to the water side. However as soon as the first one was put into the water if fell apart, the second disintegrated a soon as the team tried to get on board and the third which we all expected to complete the course started to experience problems when it reached the turning point and shortly afterwards disaster struck. Peter Minter, Rotary Club president said ‘he was very impressed with the way the students approached the different challenges and all worked together. The day appeared to be a huge success everyone enjoying themselves and even the weather was excellent.’ For the top ten students who the examiners thought had benefited the most from the day they will be receiving an invitation to a fully subsidised (free) weekend event in Danbury later this year.
