In the build up to the Powys Eisteddfod 2016, to be held at Park Hall Oswestry from July 15th-16th, members of The Rotary Club of Oswestry met with members of the Cymrodoriaeth, the Governing Fellowship of the Powys Eisteddfod, at The Sweeney Hall Hotel, Oswestry at 10.00am today. The Rotarians were finding out more about how their grant of £2,500 from the Mary Hignett Bequest Fund, administered by the Club, will be applied in the main choral competition and the Arts and Crafts section.
This is an exciting venture for the Club who previously supported the Eisteddfod at Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant in 2011, and appropriate as Mary Hignett, whose bequest enabled the grant, was most fond of the area being a founder member of the Montgomeryshire Field Society and the Border Field Club and a teacher at Welshpool High School. This, however, is the first time the Powys Eisteddfod has returned to Oswestry since 2002. Originally part of Old Powys, Oswestry has a proud and vibrant Welsh tradition, maintaining its cultural association with Wales. In fact, the Powys Eisteddfod has previously been held in Oswestry on several occasions, including 1896 and then in the 1930s and 1962 in Cae Glas Park.
