RC Llanelli - HARK Project Update
Llanelli’s Global Grant Update
The Rotary Club of Llanelli in partnership with the Rotary Club of Accra Labone, supported by a Rotary Foundation Global Grant, presented a Hearing Assessment and Research Klinik (HARK) to the University of Education Winneba in November 2014. Since January 2015 this mobile clinic has been used for field clinical hearing screening mainly in the Central region of Ghana since.
A HARK research team made up of researchers, audiologists/student audiologists, clinical assistants, student researchers and a nurse has been involved in these hearing screening exercises.
During the last 12 months to March 2016, the HARK team has screened 11,137 school children/students and adults in deprived communities mainly in the Central region.
Although the focus of the HARK team is to screen infants, school children and students, over 400 adults within communities that the team visits have also been screened. All of these field screening exercises are preceded by an educative talk on causes and prevention of hearing loss.
The local community cannot thank and the Rotary Clubs of Llanelli and Accra Labone and the Rotary Foundation for putting the smiles back on the faces of thousands of Ghanaian infants and children who otherwise had no prospects at all of ever having their ears checked.
