Giving interview advice and practice to the students of Bishop Young Academy

Fourteen members of the club participated in a mock interview session at the academy to give year 10 students guidance and experience in presenting their application forms and themselves when seeking to progress to further and higher education and training for the world of work.

Each student presented a Rotarian interviewer with an application form, giving information on such matters as:

  • Expected examination grades
  • Work experience and community service
  • Sports and hobbies
  • Thoughts about further education and careers
  • Personal strengths and areas needing development
  • Outside interests
  • Longer term aims and ambitions

The interviewer completed an assessment form, commenting on such matters as:

  • The presentation and content of the form
  • Personal presentation
  • Confidence at introduction
  • Posture, body language, eye contact, and demeanour (nervous, at ease, friendly, etc)
  • Ability to talk - volume, pace, etc
  • Research into possible jobs and further education
  • Outside interests

Some 120 students were interviewed during the course of the day.

The academy's Careers Adviser has informed us that the students gained a lot out of the experience, and has expressed her thanks to us for giving up our time.

This is just one of the ways in which Rotary Leeds renders service to young people in the Leeds community.
