For the first time in its' 94-year history, the Rotary Club of Letchworth Garden City has a woman among its ranks. Retired Letchworth teacher Yvonne Sonnen is our first woman member since the club started in 1924.

Rotary abandoned its men-only rule in 1989 since when more than 250,000 women worldwide have become members. And Yvonne, a former Year 6 teacher at Wilbury Primary School in Letchworth, is delighted to be now leading the way at the Rotary Club of Letchworth Garden City.

" I feel very honoured to have been accepted as the club's latest recruit. I have always admired the community ethos of Rotary and particularly the links it has to education and helping young people in the area wherever it can" she says.

"There's a role for both men and women in the organisation. I don't expect I'll be the club's only female member for very long.I know a number of women keen to join.

" I'm delighted we've made club history " said Club President Peter Jackson " We've been open to ladies as well as gentlemen for almost 30 years. But I think quite a few women didn't fancy actually being the first one to join us! Now, thanks to Yvonne, that's changed forever. "

Yvonne, who lives on Fairfield Park on the outskirts of Letchworth, joins husband Bryan - a club member for more than 10 years and a former Club President.

Best wishes to you - and Dave who we met only a few weeks ago at Club Assembly.
