A locally based charity has benefitted from a £5,000 donation given by Royston’s Rotarians. Acorn House, at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge, provides a ‘home from home’ for parents and carers of very sick children while they receive treatment. The facility, which is run by the Sick Children’s Trust, was chosen last year by Royston Rotary Club’s President David Blundell as his nominated charity.

At its Spring Luncheon last week David presented a cheque for £5,000 to Mrs Patsy Glazebrook BEM, Vice President of the Trusts’s Cambridge committee. Acorn House has 15 family rooms as well as a fully equipped laundry, playrooms and a children’s garden - so families stay together and can eat, socialise and relax, secure in the knowledge that they are very close to their child.

“It’s been a pleasure to meet some of Acorn’s staff and supporters over the past few months” said David Blundell. “I remember from my own childhood the old-style isolation hospitals where children were kept completely separated from their parents. And even at Addenbrooke’s mothers and fathers once slept in chairs on the wards, on the hospital concourse or even in their cars. Now, thanks to Acorn House, those days are gone forever. I am very proud that Rotary in Royston has been able to help them do such splendid work.”
