V. E. Day 75th Anniversary Celebrations 8th May 2020

The Rotary Club of Thornhill and District’s VE Day 75th Anniversary Celebration

EVENT CANCELLED!!!!

Regrettably due to the current situation with the CoronaVirus we have taken the decision to cancel our "VE Day 75th Celebration", we hope to plan something later in the year. Watch this space!

Some of you can may still remember Ration Books! While they were still being used in the early 1950’s, it was during the Second World War that everyone, whether adult or child would need to have. Fast forward 75 years from 1945, and would you believe they are to be issued again - in Sanquhar at least!

For The Rotary Club of Thornhill and District are getting together with Mennock SWI to promote an evening of food, music and memories which will celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day on Friday 8th May 2020.

The evening is to be held in Sanquhar Town Hall where a “Bully Beef” supper with the vegetarian alternative of Woolton pie will be served. The Nithsdale Singers will be among the performers and all who come along will be encouraged to dress in the style of 1945. As well as music, there will be a special film, featuring interviews with local residents who were living and working in the area of Upper Nithsdale at the time. The film is to be a project of young students at Sanquhar Academy and they will be working under the guidance of a professional documentary film maker who is also a member of the Rotary Club.

Tickets (in the form of ration books!) will be on sale nearer the time but make sure you mark the calendar or diary for what will certainly be a memorable evening.
