Wickford Fireworks were spectacular!

After a worrying start, the fireworks display really lived up to its name!

After a worrying start, Wickford’s Fireworks Spectacular lived up to its name!

On Saturday Nov 2 the day broke to rain and high winds, not what you would call ideal fireworks weather.

However, despite that, the Rotary team got underway and started putting together the event together in anticipation of another great display.

However, when the professional Fireworks firing team arrived, and reinforced our concerns that the high wind might be too strong for the event to proceed, we conferred to determine our course of action. We checked the weather forecasts and they told us that the winds at 45 mph were expected to drop to 22 mph by early evening, and so we agreed with the firing team that we would review the situation every hour and make our decision from there.

When we got to 4pm and the forecasts were being proved right we decided that we were good to go, at which point we hit social media with messages that we were open for business!

BBC Essex Radio DJs Steve Scruton and Ian Wyatt entertained the crowds with music and fun until the big countdown to the lighting of the bonfire, and again to the fireworks themselves.

And they were spectacular indeed!

This year the Rotary Club are looking to raise funds for Carers Choices, a charity which has recently opens a shop in the High Street and are extending their presence in Wickford by opening a Silver Birch Centre in the Memorial Park itself, supporting dementia sufferers in the town.

Thank you for coming and supporting us on the night and taking part in one of our annual community events.
