Chelwood Bridge Rotary provides microcredit for entrepreneurs in developing countries

Over a number of years Chelwood Bridge Rotary has been providing small sums to individuals in developing countries to get their businesses started or expanded. So far we have helped 45 individuals who have created 47 jobs locally.

The average amount lent has been £173.  Typical businesses are cottage industries such as animal raising, Cobbler, Hairdresser, Sewing and tailoring and bakery. Countries where we have made loans include Peru, Iraq, Philippines, Ecuador and Malawi.

The scheme administered by Lend with Care is highly successful and so far we have invested more than £3000 including rolled over repayments of early loans. The default record is zero which makes it a very attractive project to support.

President Mike Hedges said yesterday ” We have been delighted to support these individuals enabling them to support themselves and their families as well as creating jobs in often very poor communities. We plan to continue to support these loans and roll over all of the repayments received thereby increasing the number of loans we can continue to make to enable people able to help themselves.
