Darlington Rotarian Goes Naked

Rtn Tony Marshall shaves off his beard after more than 40 years

It's been a hair-raising time for Darlington Rtn Tony Marshall, who has raised more than £1,200 for Covid hit charities by shaving off the beard he has sported for more than 50 years.

Tony, 71, grew the beard when he was 19 and even his wife of 41 years, Kathy, has never seen him without facial hair.

The sponsorship money - which is still coming in - is being raised for two local charities: the King's Foodbank and St Teresa's hospice, and for the NHS Covid-19 Urgent Appeal.

Tony said: 'It's come as a bit of a shock to everyone, especially Kathy. But it's frustrating not being able to undertake the normal things Rotary does to raise money, so I wondered what I could do. It was either the hair or the beard - and I opted for the beard because I've got a funny-shaped head!'

Darlington Rotary President Sue Campbell said: ' Tony's sacrifice is a brilliant example of original thinking. Darlington Rotary is still working hard to do what it's done for nearly 100 years - volunteering and raising money. In these lockdown days it's not as easy, but this initiative is a great way to raise funds and bring people together.

'Enormous thanks to Tony and those who have donated thus far.'
