‘WALK THE WYE CHALLENGE’ is a fundraising walking event in the Wye Valley, organised by
the Rotary Monmouth to raise funds for the ‘Velindre’ breast cancer research team. The
event is an adaptation to the long running series of annual Walk the Wye events run by
Rotary Monmouth. However, in response to requests from previous participants, the event
now has a more varied and challenging format.

About the Walks

The event is based at Monmouth Show Ground.

Instead of the six riverbank walks previously on offer, there are four routes to choose
from, each one consisting of a different degree of challenge. Walkers and their family
and friends are encouraged to choose the walk they prefer. They are listed below, from the easiest to the most difficult.

WALK 1... 4 miles: Monmouth - Wyesham – Redbrook – Monmouth (Total ascent 250 feet)

This is a circular walk for those who enjoy a short riverbank walk. The route starts at
Monmouth Show Ground, continues through Wyesham and on to Redbrook via the old
railway line. Then, cross the road to the banks of the River Wye and walk back to
Monmouth Show Ground on the riverbank footpath.

This walk will start at 09:45

WALK 2... 10 miles: Tintern to Monmouth (Total ascent 1250 feet)

A free bus will take you to the walk start at Tintern. The walk involves climbing to the ridge above the River
Wye and then onwards to Monmouth, taking in the magnificent Cleddon Falls and continuing to Whitebrook. Then, continue on the Wye Valley footpath back to Monmouth Show Ground.

The free bus will leave Monmouth Show Ground at 10:30

WALK 3... 12 miles: Monmouth to Redbrook to Wyegate Green to Monmouth (Total ascent 1200 feet)

This walk starts at Monmouth Show Ground, goes through Wyesham and on to
Redbrook via the old railway line. Then, pass through Redbrook and climb up to the
ridge on the English side of the Wye. Then, walk along the ridge passing Wyegate
Green, descend to Bigsweir and return to Monmouth on the Welsh side of the
Wye.

This walk starts at 09:30

WALK 4... 16 miles: Chepstow to Monmouth (Total ascent 2700 feet)

This is the most challenging walk. A free bus will take you to Chepstow Leisure Centre. The walk starts at the Wye Valley footpath behind the Leisure Centre, goes up over the infamous 365 steps to the Eagles Nest view point, before dropping down to Tintern. Then, climb again and follow the ridge above the River Wye towards Monmouth, taking in the magnificent Cleddon Falls, before descending to Whitebrook.
Then continue on the Wye Valley footpath back to Monmouth Show Ground.

The free bus will leave Monmouth Show Ground at 08:15.
