Where are you, Guy Fawkes?

Sadly Guy Fawkes won't be visiting Wickford this year. It is with great sadness that we have to announce that we won't be able to hold the Fireworks Spectacular this year. But we still have a target!

So the scene was set; the fireworks have been ordered, the catering settled and all the hundred and one other things which go towards the Fireworks Spectacular this year were in place in principle.

And then the sad realisation that this year as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, we won't be able to run the Fireworks Spectacular in the Memorial Park this year.

Earlier this year we did the calculations to determine if we could run the event and keep everyone socially distanced, and concluded that it wouldn't be possible due to lack of space for you, the public. We looked to see if it was practical to run the event in another part of the park, but for a number of reasons that isn't possible either.

And so it is with a heavy heart that we have to announce that the Fireworks display, which has been part of the fabric of life in Wickford for many years past will not go ahead in 2020.

This is really sad for a number of reasons; we have for many years received lovely comments from the people of the town for putting on such a great display, and equally importantly we have raised a large amount of money over the years for local charities as a result of the support that we get from you, the people of Wickford. This was the year when we had hoped to break the £100,000 barrier for monies raised for charity as a result of the display since the Rotary Club took the event on from the Round Table in 2001. As at 2018 the amount raised had got to £99,808. Last year we sadly made a loss because of low turnout as a resultof the appalling weather, but still donated £1.500 from our reserves to the Silver Birch Centre located in the park

So this year we were hoping to cover the £192 to get to £100,000 and recoup the £1,500 to our reserves.

Can You Help?

Can you spare a donation to help our cause and enable us to break the £100,000? Any donation is valuable. If you can, please make a donation here

As a thank you, please enjoy these photos from prior fireworks events!
