The Hubble Space Telescope with Tony Bell

Thu, Jan 28th 2021 at 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Tony will be talking to us on Thursday 28th January. Visitors are especially welcome -see details below.

As a Chartered Electrical Engineer Tony Bell retired from university lecturing in Power Systems and has immensely enjoyed retirement. He’s been a member of Glossop Rotary Club for 37 years and was privileged to be President in 1996.

In 1975 he was invited to apply for a Paul Harris Rotary Foundation Post-Graduate Scholarship which he won allowing him to Study for a Masters in Power Engineering at Edmonton, Canada. With his wife and 3 year old daughter accompanying him along with their 5 month old son and with temperatures ranging from -40C to +40C it turned out to be an incredibly diverse and wonderful year for a young family. Amazingly enough, he even managed to obtain the Masters Degree despite the many wonderful temptations within the National Parks of Alberta, British Columbia & North America.

Since joining Rotary in1984 he describes it as a life changing scenario for both him and his family. The Foundation has always been close to his heart & especially the End Polio Now Campaign from its inception in 1985 to date. He is thrilled to see how close it is to now being on the verge of complete elimination of this terrible disease. The steadfast determination and generosity of Bill & Melinda Gates, thousands of Rotarians Worldwide, The World Health Authority and the general public along with hundreds of “on the ground immunising volunteers” has brought us all to the point where we can hopefully pray for its final eradication.

During this difficult time we are meeting online twice per month on the 2nd and 4th Thursday's at 7pm via Zoom.

Visiting Rotarians and guests are always welcome but please contact us beforehand, using the 'Contact' option below, so we know to expect you and don't leave you in the Waiting Room.

Members will be advised of the connection details nearer the time
