Rotary Responds. Helping our friends and colleagues in Malawi

We have had a close association for the last few years with a hospital in Blantyre Malawi, helping them to build up and expand ENT services in Malawi - details here. http://bit.ly/ENTMalawi

The second wave of Covid has hit Malawi very hard and they have no vaccines to date. The ENT Unit we support at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital has been designated the Covid ward and theatres for the hospital and the unit is struggling for facilities.

Our ENT colleague in Malawi, Dr Wakisa Mulwafu, put together a list of basic essentials to supply and monitor oxygen to the patients. The cost was to be just less than £7,000. This equipment would be put to immediate use in the Covid crisis and, when the crisis is over, it would be retained for use in the ENT department.

We launched our appeal on 4th February. Meanwhile, our partners, the Rotary Club of Limbe Malawi, have been able to source these items at a much reduced cost. The response to the appeal has been amazing. Just two weeks later on the 18th February we were able to join in by Zoom whilst the Rotary Club of Limbe, Malawi handed over an oxygen concentrator, a patient monitor and pulse oximeters to the ENT department at the hospital! Pictured is the handover.

We hope that this the first of many handovers as our appeal is still open. Further details here, where you can also make a donation.  https://bit.ly/bWcovidMalawi
