The Rotary Club of Grimsby has been unable to hold any of our fundraising events for the past 12 months, which in normal times would fund our charitable donations. What a extraordinary and challenging year it has been for us all.
Our President, John Clark, proposed last year that Members may like to contribute to our fundraising by making a donation in lieu of not having the cost of a weekly lunch during the pandemic. These donations from Club Members, plus a Memorial fund on behalf of the late Richard Vivian and a Grant from District 1040, has resulted in us raising in excess of £13,400. This wonderful achievement will support less fortunate people in our Community.
The donations to Harbour Place have enabled them to allocate a “winter pack” to any clients using the Night Shelter and to others sleeping rough. The pack consists of a pair of waterproof footwear, two thermal base layers and new underwear. Gill at Harbour Place said “We know this is not a substitute to having a roof over your head but it will help combat some of the worst weather and make life just a little bit easier”.
Our donations to the Rock Foundation have enabled them to hand out around 400 Christmas bags and food parcels to those in urgent need. The number of people queuing for food parcels has doubled over the past 12 months. “It is because furlough is coming to an end for a lot of families and many more are being made redundant. We are starting to see the effects of it now,” said Pam at the Rock Foundation.
Other beneficiaries from donations have been Grimsby Women’s Aid, who provide a safe house where women and children fleeing from domestic abuse can live free from violence. The Grimsby Food Kitchen help the homeless, and the most vulnerable with food, support and a recovery programme.
