One hundred years of Rotary in Wakefield

On 3rd June 1921 George Foster who owned a grocer’s store in the Bull Ring, Wakefield, strode across the doorway of the nearby Strafford Arms, then a hotel, and as the president of the Rotary Club of Wakefield opened its inaugural meeting. Today a Blue Plaque hangs on its wall proudly commemorating the event.  As a twist, the plaque was mounted by George’s two grandsons Richard and John Foster who run a building firm in Wakefield.

From the left Stuart Livesey current President of the Rotary Club of Wakefield, Valerie Woods Manager of Craft Union which owns the Strafford Arms and Kevin Trickett MBE President of the Wakefield Civic Society.
