KNIGHTON ROTARY CLUB “OPEN DOORS” INITIATIVE

INSPIRES LOCAL PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

As things gradually return to normal across the country, Angela Ellis, an incoming President of the Knighton and District Rotary Club, felt it important to inspire young people with opportunities to open new doors. Angela said today “Rotary International’s theme for this year is to encourage us to open doors of opportunity and not dwell on the closed doors of the past”. Angela also added “I felt that, to tie in with the Queens Jubilee celebrations, allowing junior school pupils to express their thoughts and wishes for the future would be a good idea.”

To that end the Rotary Club purchased small wooden doors for the students to paint on the front and write their dreams on the back. Both Knighton and Presteigne Primary Schools have agreed to participate with the project, with the Knighton school deciding how best to display them.

However, with the support of Head Teacher Mr Lewis, the students of Presteigne Primary School completed the doors and they have been attached to the railings of the school for the Jubilee half term celebrations. Some of the students’ dreams included wanting to end all wars, having everyone in the world being happy and ending plastic waste. They also had aspirations of going to the moon and being footballers, ballerinas, vets, doctors, zookeepers, gymnasts, and pilots.

Mr Lewis added “I really was inspired by this project, put forward by the Knighton Rotary Club, and appreciated Rotary members Christine and Brian Price bringing it to our attention. We do look forward to working more closely with the Rotary Club in the future”. You can see the “open doors of opportunity” in the attached photos.
