The urgent immunisation campaign will see nearly a million children offered the vaccine - including those already up to date with their jabs.
This is in response to the discovery of Polio Virus in London’s wastewater.
Polio is seen as a disease of the past in the UK after the whole of Europe was declared polio-free in 2003.
There are a few countries where the disease is still found - it includes war-torn Afghanistan and Pakistan, where it has been difficult to vaccinate everyone.
Rotary made a promise to the children of the world of a Polio free world in 1985 and has since, together with its partners helped vaccinate billions of children.
The news from London shows that the disease is still a threat – it is only a train ride away.
In order to raise awareness of the risk and to raise funds, we are organising a frugal supper at Cold Ash Acland Memorial Hall (RG18 9JH), on Saturday 17 September 7:30 to 9:30pm.
