KNIGHTON ROTARY CLUB SUPPORTS UKRAINIAN FAMILIES IN THE MARCHES

In October the Rotary Club of Knighton and District successfully applied for a £1,200 grant from Rotary's own International charity, the Rotary Foundation.

As Knighton Rotary President Kim Smith said, “This grant is specifically to support Ukrainian families being hosted in the Knighton and District Marches region”. Kim added “We live in a very rural area and literacy is a necessary skill to help the families integrate and pursue employment”. The Rotary Club has worked with the North Herefordshire and South Shropshire Support Group (NH&SS) to identify their needs and agreed that the grant will be used to provide ESOL classes for adults and children.

Knighton Rotary Club International Chair Paul Barrett added “ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages, with classes and workshops being run by qualified teachers and volunteer teaching assistants at Leominster Community Centre”.

Volunteers and host families help with transport from the villages so this grant will enable the teachers to purchase course materials, workbooks, and teaching equipment. As Kim Smith added “We are proud to be able to support Ukrainian families in our communities with this grant from the Rotary Foundation, through our Rotary District 1150 International Committee.”
