We attended the prize giving ceremony of the Knighton Children’s Gardening Club on Thursday July 27th 2023.

Knighton Rotary President Angela Ellis (AKA Tigger) and Knighton Rotary Treasurer Sheila Smith attended the prize giving ceremony of the Knighton Children’s Gardening Club on Thursday July 27th 2023.

The concept of a gardening club, based in the Community Garden behind to Knighton Library, was the brainchild of Librarian Hannah Isaacson and volunteer gardener Tom Johnson was willing to take the youngsters under his wing. The Gardening Club met on the fourth Saturday of every month, from 10.30am to 12 noon, from February until this event. As Tom said “I taught gardening to the 0- to 11-year-old children and found it very rewarding”

As President Angela said “We are delighted as a Rotary Club to be able to sponsor these awards. Young people getting involved in nature is to be applauded and encouraged.” Every child received a certificate and prize, but judges were particularly impressed with the basil plant that won first prize.

Unfortunately the child who won the first prize was not able to attend on the day. However many other children did come along and, as you can see from the photos, they enjoyed themselves very much. Sadly, our photographer was not able to get the names of the prize winners as the event was rather busy, although it was lovely to see the enthusiasm of the attendees!
