Photo exhibition - 'The Price of Freedom

During a full week in August, Durham Elvet Rotary arranged an exhibition of photographs in ‘Discovering Durham’ in Prince
Bishops Place. This was entitled ‘The Price of Freedom’ and was presented in conjunction with ‘Bracelets and Peace’, a project started by educators around the world, coming together to promote peace and to encourage positive actions and
creativity. Projects within Ukraine currently involve the preparation of basements as air raid shelters in Vinnytsia and the
equipping of safety rooms to allow for continued education of children. In Mukachevo they support four orphanages by
supplying medicines for children with special needs, clothing and items for babies and young children, and food to eat.
The display, an idea by Rotarian Tom Sharples, included 33 photographs taken by Kostian Revutskyi in various parts of
Ukraine following the invasion of the country in February 2022. The images were powerful and thought-provoking, and
attracted a great deal of interest, including a visit by City of Durham MP, Mary Kelly Foy. Ukrainian volunteers who currently
reside in the Durham area were on hand to make bracelets in their national colours which were sold and then worn as a
sign of support and friendship. Their sad and tragic personal stories saw some brought to tears.
Rotarians were available to explain our commitment to ‘Peace and Conflict Resolution’ as one of our areas of focus and to
talk about Rotary in general.
