The food bank provided emergency parcels to over 8,500 families in the previous year, so when club members saw a message asking for help, they decided to create a fund instead of giving each other Xmas cards. The amount collected was around £600 which was shared between warm clothes for the homeless and food donations to the local food bank.
Having asked the Food Bank what they’d like, Secretary Pauline visited Aldi Supermarket and spent the money on: tins of Salmon x 24, Potatoes x 72,Tomatoes x 72, Mackerel x 24, Tuna Steaks x 88, Sardines x 48, Chopped Ham & Pork x 12, bags of sugar x 13 kgs and pots of Hot Chocolate x 24. Nick, Aldi’s Manager, was also persuaded to augment our shop with extra tins of Corned Beef and a lovely girl called Kat, managed to get it through the till in no time at all.
When Pauline and President Elect Helen delivered this lot to the Food Bank it weighed in at 161.25 kgs of food. They were delighted and we were pleased to have spent the money on something worthwhile.
