A report of a visit to the centre

In the 1800's Grimsby rapidly developed into the World’s Premier Fishing port and fresh fish was available nationwide. It is appropriate that this is celebrated by the “fishing experience tableaus” in the Fishing Heritage Centre. A tour of the Ross Tiger gives an insight in to the conditions at sea.

Martyn Turner  organised a visit for a group of Rotarians to the Fishing Heritage Centre. It is amazing that various sections of a trawler have been incorporated into the building to provide the story of going to, being at sea and  home from a trip. Three days in port (as “Millionaires”) after (and before another) three week trip.

We had a conducted tour of the Ross Tiger by a retired skipper, who told us that he would love to make one more trip! The Tiger was built in 1957 in Selby and was state of art for her time and was a side trawler. Doorways have been cut into the structure to facilitate a tour. It was made all the more interesting by personal anecdotes. Crew were only allowed one bath/shower per trip!! (usually before arriving at the dock and puting on a suit for the pub).

If you have never been to the Centre or the Ross Tiger we can heartily recommend a visit.
