2010 News ---- and the Juniors came first
Now in its 16th successful year and organised by the Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham the Bognor Prom 10K Race and Junior Fun Races took place on Sunday 16th May with help on the day from willing friends and local companies - for which we are eternally grateful.
The Bognor Prom 10K race attracts runners from throughout the South of England and is a great local attraction drawing huge crowds to cheer the runners (and the juniors) on. Contestants for the Junior Fun Runs were up this year totalling 161 compared with 149 in 2009.
The weather held good with just a light breeze and hint of rain making the going good for most of the record number of runners.
The day started early with the Junior Fun Run along the prom and was organised into two races:
8 - 11 year olds, and 12 - 14 year olds.

BOGNOR ROTARY CLUBS COLLECT FOR HAITIAN VICTIMS
In response to the disaster appeal following the earthquake in Haiti, both The Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham & The Rotary Club of Bognor Regis took to the streets of Bognor Regis last Saturday to collect funds for the people of Haiti.

Members of The Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham & The Rotary Club of Bognor Regis collect for The Haiti Appeal in Bognor Regis town Centre. |
Shelter Boxes, which cost £490, provide shelter and warmth for up to 10 people for a prolonged period. They contain a high quality 10-person tent, manufactured from lightweight but resilient and robust materials plus 10 high quality durable sleeping bags and ancillary equipment such as a multi fuel cooker, water purification equipment, spade and rope. |
Over £1700 was collected and both Club Presidents were delighted with the generosity of the people of Bognor for this appeal.
For many years Rotary Clubs have purchased Shelter boxes that are immediately sent out to disaster areas. The two clubs will now purchase more of these with the funds that have been donated. The Rotary Club of Bognor Regis has already purchased four of these boxes and our own Bognor Hotham Club will make a sizeable donation that will be added to the amount collected to enable the purchase of further units.
A Shelter box contains equipment including a tent, cooking equipment and a water purification set that can support a family of ten in a disaster area.
Click on the link below to read a news update on Rotary-Aid-Relief in Haiti. The news report confirms the huge efforts made by Rotary members to help supply both Shelter Boxes and Aqua Boxes to the people of Haiti

10K Bognor Prom Road Race - 17th May 2009
Despite heavy rain and winds there was a good turnout for the early morning Childrens Fun Run and the participants enjoyed the challenge.By the time runners were ready on the starting grid for the Bognor Prom 10K Road Race the sun was shining at West Park.
The Bognor Prom 10K Road Race is an annual and very popular event organised by The Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham and attracts runners from far and wide, all eager to raise money for charity and many of them hoping to achieve their own ‘personal best time’ in the bargain.
Thanks go to the hundreds of people who helped to make the day a success.
A full range of photographs are available from the official photographers and can be viewed by clicking on www.sussexsportphotography.com
We thank you for taking part and hope that you enjoyed the race.

Training
The Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham race organisers offer training sessions through Rotary Road Runners, a small but keen group of runners who meet every Thursday at 7pm at West Park. Anyone wishing to join them will be welcome, regardless of ability-just turn up.
Sponsors
The day’s races would not be possible without the help of our many sponsors and helpers. Many are acknowledged below, but particular thanks are due to the Bognor Regis Observer, which has been closely involved with the event since the early days. We are delighted to welcome Chestnut Tree House as charity partner for 2009 and we hope that the run will raise significant sums of money for the charity as well as other good causes close to the hearts of our runners. The Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham will increase all money raised by runners, through its top-up scheme, and always gives thousands of pounds to charities from the event.

Award Winner
The Bognor Prom 10K Road Race is not the only race in the UK of course and it is with great pride we draw attention to the ongoing success of our fellow Rotary Club member David Crook.
A dedicated runner and founder member of The Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham David has inspired others and won many awards during his running career.
David capped his successes by winning the British Middle Distance Triathlon Championship 2008 (age group 65 to 69) and is shown proudly displaying his medal– Well done David |

Why ‘Bognor Hotham’
Bognor is one of the oldest Saxon sites on record in West Sussex and was recorded in AD 680 as Bucgan.
Sir Richard Hotham was born in York in 1722. He moved to London where he traded as a hosier and hatter later joining the East India Company where he commanded four ships and generally amassed an immense fortune. In the late 1700’s he turned his attention to property and exercised a considerable influence on the development of Bognor which until that time had been a sleepy fishing village, with it is said, a reputation for smuggling.
Enter, King George V who after successfully convalescing in Bognor during 1929 bestowed the title Royal , or ‘Regis’ on Bognor thus creating our present town of Bognor Regis.
The only element missing from this is the formation of our own Rotary Club in the late 1980’s which adopted the key elements of the two distinctive names and became Bognor Hotham Rotary Club.
Bognor Hotham is probably the most southerly Rotary club in the UK being based in the Royal Hotel in Bognor Regis close to the sea and the towns promenade.
|
![]() |
The area enjoys one of the highest sunshine records in the UK. |
So we have Bognor Hotham Rotary Club – add a lively club atmosphere, a mixed team of local professionals and a generous helping of fundraising - and we have a warm and welcoming club that offers considerable financial support to local charitable organizations.
The Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham Trust Fund is registered as a charity; No. 1039210
At our Tuesday evening business meetings we enjoy an excellent meal service provided by the Royal Hotel with the meetings alternating between formal Dinner and slightly more Casual evenings.
On the 5th Tuesday of the month (when a 5th Tuesday occurs) we extend an invitation to our spouses and partners.
Most Tuesday evenings are enriched by a Speaker and in recent months we have been able to listen to, and enjoy discussions with, for example the Director of Fishbourne Palace, a lady from RSPB, a gentleman from a local Detective Agency, and even one of our own members giving a memorable talk on ‘Landmark Beers’.
Our current Meeting Programme is shown at the foot of this page, and also in 'Meeting Programme' (in the panel top left of the main page).
Fund Raising and Awards
Our energetic fundraisers are responsible for the Bognor 10K Prom Race held in May which attracts a huge number of runners from far and wide (and is the place to be), |
|
and our Santa Clause sleigh which travels throughout Bognor in the lead up to Christmas bringing seasonal music and Christmas joy to all. |

When we are not fundraising we enjoy life.
Previous social events have included the Presidents Garden Party |

Needless to say there are many other events both social and fundraising that seem to involve, darts, golf, eating, and drinking – all are greatly enjoyable.
We must not forget our wives and partners who keep themselves busy in the Hotwives club which includes an active book club among its many social functions.
Bognor Hotham Rotary Club is eager to attract new members.
