The Rotary Club of Garstang and Over Wyre

Do you ever feel that you would like to put something back into society?

Are you interested in giving up some of your time for voluntary service, locally, nationally and internationally?

Could you mentor or advise young people in your neighbourhood?

Perhaps you would enjoy the friendship and social life of some like minded company!

Then why not think about joining your local Rotary Club?

Garstang Area

The Rotary Club of Garstang and Over Wyre, founded in 1965, is open to men and women of all ages and meets at the Pickerings Country House Hotel, Catterall on Wednesday evenings. We are an active group but we are always looking for new members. In the past few years the Rotary Club of Garstang and Over Wyre has organised the Santa Sleighs around Garstang, The Hamburger Stall at the Victorian Festival, Duck Racing down the River Wyre, Classic Car Rallies and other similar events. The funds we have raised have helped us pay for the annual Brass Band Concerts for pensioners, the turkey for the WRVS Christmas Dinner and to support local charities such as Pat Seed, Hospices and Croston House. We have bought the Dictionary4Life for local primary schools, roses and bulbs for Britain in Bloom and equipment for research into cancer.

Internationally the money so generously given by the residents of Garstang & Over Wyre have been sent in times of natural disaster to Haiti, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. We have also provided water sand dam reservoirs for Kenya, solar cookers in Rwanda and Mexico, cows for Uganda and medicines for children in Zambia.

Perhaps the most significant on going theme for Rotary is "Thanks for Life". After talks to local primary and secondary schools we have helped them to raise funds for the eradication  of Polio.

Paul Harris set up what was to become the first Rotary Club in Chicago in 1905. The idea of friends meeting regularly gathered momentum particularly when the friends decided to find opportunities to serve their local communities. The idea came to Great Britain and Ireland before the First World War and many Clubs have a tradition that goes back to that time.

Many things have changed but our Club remains true to those first ideals; if people form friendships they are better able to work together for their communities. The idea of community now extends from the local neighbourhood to the whole of the UK & Ireland and beyond to all points of the globe where help is needed.

We are changing but the need for Rotarians to serve has not gone away. In the pages of our website you can see the current events we have planned. For even more information visit www.ribi.org.

It is sometimes easier, as this year's President of our Club says, "To put money in the bucket rather than be the hand that holds the bucket".

If you would like to help hold the bucket and join Rotary please contact; Roger Mason 01995 603447
