An evening of fun and fellowship to celebrate St George's day.

MORPETH ROTARY ST. GEORDIE'S DAY CELEBRATION

Forty Rotarians, friends and guests celebrated St. Geordie's Day by decorating a room with English flags and revelling, with songs, poems and recitations. They were inspired by the presence of Honorary member, retired Morpeth gadgie, Alex Swailes whose 92nd birthday it was that day. He blew out the candles on his special birthday tree and sang a North East song written by his late brother.

The meal was stotties with hot beef followed by apple pie and custard.

The party continued with stories of the history of St. George and the reciting of Henry V's St. Crispin's Day speech at Agincourt from Shakespeare's play. President Julie Mulqueen and member Jane sang 'Let's Do It!' by Victoria Wood. Julie sang again in a duet with Jan Rosen dressed as Cushie Butterfield. The entertainment ended with another Jan, the shantyman, singing 'A Drop of Nelson's Blood' and then everyone joined in with Jerusalem, Rule Britannia and God Save the King.

Members were reminded that they were running a stall in Morpeth market place for the next five Wednesdays to collect second hand tools in support of the interdenominational Christian charity 'Tools With a Misson', to help people in the poorest parts of Africa start up small businesses.
