Whitemoor On Track David Miller, Development Manager for British Rail, Whitemoor, spoke to an attentive audience at the meeting of March Rotary Club upon the 9th August. He told how his supervision started in November 2002, and since then has overseen the development of Whitemoor Rail Yard into the success it has become. The early days involved translation of a colony of Great Crested Newts, and many other invertebrates. Archaeological excavations in the last year have revealed relics of March’s industrial heritage in the 19th and 20th Century, with what is thought to be evidence of the Roman Fen Causeway. Explaining how rail track, sleepers, and ballast from the South East of England are recycled, creating local jobs, and helping the environment, it was generally felt by the audience that this was a ‘good thing’ for March and the economy. Questions continued until time called a halt. Rotarian Peter English gave a vote of thanks to very warm applause.
