International Committee
This year the club has been already been involved in a number of activities overseas. One of our members has been to Nepal to continue work on iodine deficiency disease. This condition which has mental and physical consequences is caused by a lack of iodine in the diet and can be resolved by using iodised salt. Up until now, the work has focused on establishing the extent of the disease, but we are now switching to disease prevention by finding ways to transport salt to remote and mountainous parts. The recent visit to Nepal was to discuss with Rotary clubs in Nepal the best way to achieve this and to set up the infrastructure to achieve it. We are planning to use trekkers and porters to carry the salt to the places in need.
The following illustration shows one of the team collecting information on children having obtained a urine specimen to measure the levels of iodine in the body
The following picture shows how salt is typically carried to the remote areas and once it reaches there it is often left at the roadside for months at a time. If iodised salt is used, it will deteriorate under these conditions, so we also have to educate the locals into the best methods of storage and use.
