Rotary Club of Thame has sponsored & supported International projects for nearly 50 years. Currently we work with and are supporting the following:

End Polio Now!

'End Polio Now' a campaign run by Rotary International aimed to eliminate polio has received continued support from the Rotary Club of Thame.

Rotary ShelterBox and Aqua Box Schemes

Every year we have supported ShelterBox and Aquabox.

We have been raising money mainly through street collections(in front of the Thame Town Hall) and club events.

Please click onto the ShelterBox logo on the left to find out where the boxes were shipped.

Shelter Box is run by the Shelter Box Trust, an organisation with worldwide affiliations. The money raised have provided releif to areas affected by disasters (Haiti, Pakistan, China etc.). The trust was founded by Rotarian Tom Henderson a Royal Navy Search & Rescue Diver & is now firmly established in the forefront of disaster relief. The typical contents of a box are: 10 person tent. Blankets, Ground sheet, Multi fuel stove, Water containers & Purification kit.

On many occasions the fundraising and item collection was done in conjunction with local schools also Thame Girl Guides & Brownies Troops.

Tools for Self Reliance

Every year we hold a stall in Thame Market Square, where old unwanted tools can be DELIVERED, or when folk CANNOT deliver – we COLLECT. These are then taken to the charity 'Tools for Self Reliance' at Netley Marsh who refurbish them and ship them to well organised Apprentice Schemes, Colleges & Villages in Africa. The average weight of each collection is approx 2tons! But the main criteria for success are the number of refurbished tools, shipped to the well organised projects that receive them. Over the years renewed supported 35 projects in Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Sierra Leone & Zambia.

International Charity Work

The monies donated to support our chosen charities are raised by a variety of means & include:

The Three Peaks Challenge (Climbing Ben Nevis, Helvellyn & Snowdon within 24 hours) was completed in June 2006 in 23 hrs 7mins and a collection of over £7000 was achieved for Sight Savers International. Another such climb will be undertaken in 2010.

Organised Talks: eg the Climber/Author Jo Gambi, who has climbed Everest & 6 highest peaks in World and skied to both Poles! This event raised £1100 for Cancer Research & a Local School Project in Gambia.

We support and manage the bank account for 'Micro Credit Malawi' a scheme whereby poor families in Africa can borrow money at very low interest rates to enable them to start their own businesses. This has been particularly successful in helping women to become entrepreneurial, thus gaining more independence.
